Raising funds and awareness at parishes like ours helps improve the lives of some of the world's poorest people.
What is CAFOD?
CAFOD (The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) is an international development charity and the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.
CAFOD's work is to stand alongside people living in poverty, whatever their religion or culture. Through the local Catholic Church and secular partners, CAFOD helps people directly in their own communities and campaigns for global justice, so that everyone can reach their full potential. CAFOD recognises the link between global poverty and progress rooted in integral ecology.
CAFOD arose in the 1960s to coordinate the fundraising efforts of Catholic dioceses and parishes who wanted to help some of the world's poorest people.
CAFOD's work is funded by the Catholic community in England and Wales, the British government, private and institutional donors, and the general public.
CAFOD is part of Caritas Internationalis, the worldwide federation of Catholic aid organisations with a presence in 165 countries. CAFOD is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and the Consortium of British Humanitarian Agencies.

CAFOD in our Parish
As the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, every parish is encouraged to actively support the work of CAFOD. This is done by raising funds, by spreading awareness of development issues, by encouraging campaigning for people and planet, and by prayer.
Most Catholic parishes in England and Wales have a CAFOD representative who is a link between the charity and parishioners. The CAFOD rep at Our Lady's is Linda Moore. Linda is always keen to involve others in the work of fundraising and campaigning.

The best-known example of raising funds and awareness for CAFOD's work are the two 'Family Fast Days' designated every year by the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales: one around Harvest Time in October, and one at the start of Lent in February or March. At these times the CAFOD rep or other volunteers will speak at Mass about CAFOD's work, and distribute collection envelopes.
CAFOD's work is closely connected with other initiatives in our parish inspired by our solidarity with the poor and marginalised, such as the Care for Our Common Home Group, Peru Project, and Fairtrade stall. |
